Why doesn't the Liberal Party of Australia just change it's name to Pro-Statist Reactionary Conservative Goons?

The pretence to a genuinely liberal philosophy is still strong with our Federal government. One only need look at the Our Beliefs page of the Liberal Party website;

We believe in the inalienable rights and freedoms of all peoples; and we work towards a lean government that minimises interference in our daily lives; and maximises individual and private sector initiative.

As if their dubious high-taxing, high-spending history were not enough to make a mockery of this statement, we have also had excessive anti-gun legislation, anti-competitive media laws (highlighted by the farcical digital TV policy), Federal intervention in Territory-level Euthanasia & heroin trial legislation and Richard Alston's appalling Internet & TV pro-censorship policies.

And now, this stupidity;

The full bench of the Family Court of Australia today rejected a federal government bid to quash a transsexual marriage.

The Family Court had earlier upheld the validity of the marriage between a Sydney couple known as "Kevin and Jennifer J". Kevin was born a female and had a sex-change operation. Before his marriage to Jennifer in August 1999, he had hormone treatment and irreversible surgery. He has a New South Wales birth certificate stating he is a male, a passport saying he is a male and the couple have had two children through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

In October 1999, the couple applied to the Family Court to validate their marriage, and the court later declared the marriage valid.

Attorney-General Daryl Williams challenged that decision on the grounds Kevin was not a man and therefore his marriages to Jennifer was invalid.

The Federal Attorney-General - who apparently has nothing better to do - actually saw fit spend our money and his department's resources trying to destroy a successful and happy family union, made up of decent, law-abiding citizens, purely on the basis that one of the people involved is a transsexual. Anyone with a remotely libertarian political outlook can only regard this behaviour with a mixture of nausea and disgust.

The last section of the Our Beliefs page is the kicker;

In short, we simply believe in individual freedom and free enterprise; and if you share this belief, then ours is the Party for you.

Oh no it bloody well isn't.

When a government involves itself in such utterly loathesome, discriminatory and capricious activities, it can no longer even pretend to represent the values of individual liberty and a non-interventionist government. The party's own pretence to the contrary is little other than a sick joke. Change your name and be done with it fellas, you owe us that much.
