Users versus Abusers

Who would have thought? A marijuana decriminalization bill is going before the US Congress. It won’t pass but still it is intriguing. Perhaps the ground is shifting.

stopthedrugwar.org reports that the bill reads as follows:-

“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no penalty may be imposed under an Act of Congress for the possession of marijuana for personal use, or for the not-for-profit transfer between adults of marijuana for personal use. For the purposes of this section, possession of 100 grams or less of marijuana shall be presumed to be for personal use, as shall the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce or less of marijuana, except that the civil penalty provided in section 405 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 844a) may be imposed for the public use of marijuana if the amount of the penalty does not exceed $100.”

Here is my old Texan favourite, Ron Paul, spreading the message.

  1. An American once said about the drug war, “America can be free or drug-free, but not both.” He was very right!

  2. Nicholas – just out of interest how can America be drug free?

David – shifting very slowly perhaps.

  3. If Americans give the Drug Enforcement Agents even more powers to snoop and invade privacy, AND they develop nano-technology that destroys drugs wherever they are found, then America might become a drug-free country, maybe.
I think the point he was trying to make was that the war on drugs was eroding other freedoms, TerjeP. It was also taking more and more revenue through taxes, etc.

  4. Nicholas – the USA could only really be drug free if they nuked every city, town and house in the country and they rounded up the survivors and executed them. So I suppose your point stands.

  5. Terje; You are probably being a bit optimistic there, you are assuming none of those carrying out the acts you ‘advocate’ actually use drugs. You have to stop looking for easy solutions mate.

  6. And then the sacred soil of America would be polluted by new people bringing drugs into the country! (Once the place had stopped glowing in the dark, of course.)
Now, if you nuked the whole planet clean…..
