Greed, for want of a better word …

Gordon Gekko is getting some new airplay due to the new “Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps” movie. I blame Kevin Rudd who revived the Gekko persona during the GFC. Even though Gekko is a fictional character his famous 1987 speech is worth revisiting in full because it’s key phrase is too often presented without the original context.

  1. Even though Gekko is a fictional character his famous 1987 speech is worth revisiting in full because it’s [sic] key phrase is too often presented without the original context.

A transcript is available here (via that Rudd speech link).

  2. This must rate a close second to Margaret Thatcher’s famous ‘there is no such thing as society’ quote as the most taken out of context ever.

  3. Papachango – I had exactly that thought when I wrote the post. However Gekko is fictional with fictional motives so I figure we shouldn’t mix comparisons.

  4. Why not? His fictionality didn’t stop KRudd banging on abour Gekko as if he’d personally started the GFC…

  5. Krudd actually has some good points- he married a woman who worked hard and became a millionairess, and he got a cushy job which enables him to jet around the world, visiting Scores of local entertainment Sites! What’s not to approve?
